Fall 2024 7 Fight the flu Stay up-to-date with your immunizations If you want to take your best shot at avoiding a miserable case of the flu, remember to get your flu vaccination this fall. With rare exceptions (like being allergic to a flu vaccine ingredient), everyone ages six months and up should receive an annual flu shot. Don’t count on last year’s vaccination to protect you. Immunity wanes, and each year, you need a new flu vaccination that targets the current flu strains. “The flu virus is very adaptable, just like how we adapt to our environment,” says Internal Medicine Physician Chandini Sajja, MD. “The flu vaccine has to change accordingly.” If you are in a high-risk group, getting vaccinated is especially crucial to help prevent severe complications like pneumonia. High-risk groups include people over 65 years old, pregnant women and people with compromised immune systems or chronic conditions, such as diabetes. “Please get your flu shot,” Dr. Sajja says. “It also helps to prevent other people in your home from getting sick.” Make an appointment You can request a flu shot if you are planning to see your doctor soon.
