In August, The Joint Commission certified Texas Health Mansfield as a Primary Stroke Center. This certification came after an evaluation of the hospital’s stroke program. It takes a team An entire team works in collaboration to provide swift stroke care, notes Chief Nursing Officer Kristen Sutton, RN, M.S.N. This includes emergency department doctors and nurses, lab and imaging team members, neurologists, critical care nurses, and more. When stroke patients arrive in the emergency department, this team springs into action. Among other steps, patients receive a CT scan and neurological exam. This helps determine if they’re eligible for clot-busting medication that can stop the most common type of stroke and prevent or limit brain damage. “It’s a very stringent process,” Kristen says. “You have to perform many steps in a matter of minutes because time is brain.” The longer a stroke goes untreated, the more brain cells are lost and the greater the chance of disability. Post-stroke care The amazing stroke care that the team provides doesn’t end when the emergency phase of the stroke has passed. Texas Health Mansfield connects stroke survivors to a variety of services and resources to help them recover after their hospital stay. For instance, a patient may need home healthcare; outpatient physical, speech or occupational therapy; or a short stay in a rehabilitation facility. Doctors might also follow up with patients to make sure they are on the right therapies to help prevent another stroke.
