Shannon Mints was cleaning her kitchen in March 2021 when her heart began to beat wildly. “My heart started racing, and it wouldn’t stop,” she says. Shannon’s husband, Pastor Paul Mints, rushed her to Texas Health Mansfield’s emergency room (ER), where she was quickly taken to an exam room. To address her life-threatening, racing heartbeat, doctors gave Shannon medicines that restored her heart’s normal rhythm and rate—a treatment known as chemical cardioversion. After a short stay in the ER, Shannon followed up with a cardiologist, who is now helping her manage her racing heartbeats with medications. The calm yet confident demeanor of ER physician Summer Lee Damuth, D.O., and her team was reassuring during a frightening time. “Her confidence was extremely calming for me,” Paul says. “I wish I could tell everybody how well they cared for my wife.” The Mints family says they appreciated the empathy of the staff, their attentiveness and communication skills, and that the care addressed more than just Shannon’s medical issue. “They balanced the medical emergency situation with empathy toward me as a person,” Shannon says. Ensuring whole-person care The Mints’ experience is just one example of the type of care Texas Health Mansfield’s ER strives to provide. “We have a very friendly and welcoming team,” says ER Director Kendra Arnett, M.S.N., RN, CEN. “Our team cares and wants to see the best for our patients. We will listen to you and understand the full picture of your health.” “I wish I could tell everybody how well they cared for my wife.” — Pastor Paul Mints
