Spring 2023 3 Schedule an ER visit online Check in at home, arrive at your chosen time Have one of life’s minor health emergencies? Getting care is easier with an online tool called InQuickER. If you have a minor illness or injury, you can use InQuickER to reserve a check-in time at Texas Health Mansfield’s emergency room. Then you can wait in the comfort of your home and arrive at your designated treatment time. When to use InQuickER InQuickER is for when you have a minor health issue, like a sprained ankle, cold and flu symptoms, or a stomachache that’s not too bad. Do not use InQuickER if you have a life-threatening emergency. In that case, you should call 911 immediately or go to your nearest ER. InQuickER has been well-received by patients who have used it to schedule a visit to the ER. “InQuickER is another way for patients to access care,” says Heather Granado, D.O., emergency department Medical Director. “We’ve had very good responses from patients about the ease of use.” Short wait times overall But even if you come to the emergency room instead of using InQuickER, chances are you won’t wait long. Our short wait times mean you will get the care you need as quickly as possible. “Our goal is always to have short door-to-provider times,” Dr. Granado says. “That’s one of the reasons our patients come here, so we are doing everything we can to make that happen.” Should you ever need us, know that our ER is staffed and equipped to handle all types of emergencies—from heart attacks to trauma—24/7. Schedule your ER visit fromhome To find the InQuickER tool, visit TexasHealthMansfield.org or scan the QR code with your smartphone camera. When to call 911 Seek emergency care if you have: ● Chest discomfort (including a squeezing, pressing, tight or pressure feeling), which is a common heart attack sign ● Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing ● Stroke-like symptoms, such as sudden numbness or weakness on one side of the body; sudden trouble seeing; sudden confusion; or sudden trouble speaking or understanding speech Heather Granado, D.O., emergency department Medical Director

4 TexasHealthMansfield.org Why is primary care so important? Having a primary care provider (PCP) is a great investment in your health. A PCP is a physician, nurse practitioner, physician assistant or other provider that you see for your main healthcare needs. Here are four things you should know about PCPs: 1Your PCP can help you avoid health problems. Your PCP can give you regular checkups and preventive services to help you stay healthy. These include annual wellness visits, health screenings and healthy lifestyle counseling. Some health problems don’t have symptoms at first. Your PCP can identify these problems early, when they may be easier to treat. “It is important to have a PCP even when you’re healthy and feeling fine,” says boardcertified nurse practitioner Bobby Brite, M.S.N., APRN, FNP-C. “That is the ideal time to begin to set wellness goals and to monitor your health for any problems that may arise.” 2Your PCP can help you manage your overall health. Your PCP can treat unexpected injuries and illnesses, as well as chronic diseases. If you need to see other specialists to manage your health, your PCP can refer you and coordinate your care. 3PCPs build relationships that boost their patients’ wellbeing. “I enjoy getting to know my patients and working with them to help them achieve their best level of health and wellness for years to come,” says Bobby. 4Having a PCP may help you save money. People who have a PCP tend to spend less on healthcare overall. Good reasons for a yearly visit In addition to your yearly physical, your PCP can help you with: Healthy lifestyle goals, like losing excess weight. Staying safe and preventing injuries if you or your child plans to participate in sports or recreational activities. Family planning goals, if desired. Looking for a PCP? Spring 2023 5 Meet our newest internal medicine providers Both doctors are taking new patients Even before they joined Texas Health Mansfield, Prabhash Kakarla, M.D., and Chandini Sajja, M.D., were part of a successful team. After all, they’ve been married since 2016. Career paths Dr. Kakarla grew up in the Midwest, and Dr. Sajja grew up in India. Dr. Kakarla worked in IT (information technology) before he switched to a career he knew would bring him greater satisfaction. “I was fortunate to be successful in IT,” he says. “But I chose to change careers so that I could work directly with people rather than machines.” Dr. Kakarla earned his medical degree in India. He completed an internal medicine residency at Icahn School of Medicine, in New York City, after a research fellowship at Wayne State University, in Detroit, Michigan. He also completed a geriatrics fellowship at Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, in Hempstead, New York. Dr. Sajja has wanted to be a doctor since high school. “I had family members who were doctors,” she says. “That drew me in.” She earned her medical degree in India. Dr. Sajja then completed her internal medicine residency at Hackensack Meridian Palisades Medical Center, in North Bergen, New Jersey. Internal medicine doctors (also called internists) care for adults. Dr. Kakarla and Dr. Sajja focus on primary care. Both describe themselves as warm, friendly and good listeners. As married doctors, they “support and complement” each other, Dr. Kakarla says. They met through her grandmother Dr. Kakarla met Dr. Sajja’s grandmother (also a physician) at a social gathering in Michigan. She told him about her granddaughter and thought they might be a good match. “At first, we were quite hesitant,” Dr. Sajja says. The couple recently moved to Texas from New Jersey. They have a baby daughter, Naira. In their spare time, they enjoy being with Naira, cooking, watching movies (Dr. Kakarla loves hearing movie suggestions from his patients) and exploring their new community. “Mansfield is the perfect place to raise a family.” —Prabhash Kakarla, M.D. Take time for your health Visit TexasHealthMansfield.org and click on “Schedule Appointment” to make an appointment with Dr. Kakarla, Dr. Sajja or any of our providers.

6 TexasHealthMansfield.org 4 ways to care for your colon It may not be glamorous work, but your colon has an important job to do for you. Why not give your hardworking colon the care it deserves? Here, gastroenterologist Abdullah Abdussalam, M.D., offers four ways to help you maintain a healthy colon. Meet Abdullah Abdussalam, M.D. 4Get moving! Regular exercise (like brisk walking) may reduce your colon cancer risk. If you have irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), staying active may help ease some of your symptoms. 1Plate up more produce! Eating fiber-rich fresh fruits and vegetables helps prevent constipation and possibly diverticulosis, a condition in which pockets form in the colon and may become inflamed or infected. While studies are ongoing, it appears that diets rich in fruits, veggies and whole grains and low in red, processed meats may cut the risk of colon cancer. 2Crush your smoking habit. “Smoking increases the risk of stomach and colon cancers,” Dr. Abdussalam notes. Ask your doctor about medicines and programs that can help you quit for good. 3 Get screened for colon cancer. Screening can help prevent colon cancer or find it early. Everyone ages 45 and older needs regular colon cancer screening. (Earlier screening is needed if you’re at high risk due to your personal or family health history.) Talk with your doctor about which tests are right for you. Talk with an expert Scan the QR code with your smartphone camera to learn more about Dr. Abdussalam and how to make an appointment. Abdullah Abdussalam, M.D., grew up in the Chicago area. After earning his bachelor’s degree from the University of Miami, he completed his medical degree and residency at Saint Louis University and his fellowship at Creighton University. Dr. Abdussalam specializes in the management of the health of the gastrointestinal tract and liver. Here are some of the concerns he can help with: ● Acid reflux ● Diverticulosis/ diverticulitis ● IBS ● Hemorrhoids ● Swallowing difficulty ● Ulcerative colitis ● Crohn’s disease ● Liver disease In his free time, Dr. Abdussalam likes to spend time with his wife (pediatrician Maha Haroon, M.D.), exercise and watch sports.
