Winter 2023 3 Gynecologic robotic surgery close to home High precision. Small incisions. Less downtime. Texas Health Mansfield offers gynecologic robotic surgery services so that you don’t have to drive far to get advanced, state-of-the-art care. Robotic surgery is a minimally invasive surgery. It allows surgeons to work through small incisions with great precision. During a robotic procedure, the surgeon sits at a console nearby and guides a robotic arm. This arm holds small surgical tools. Along with increasing precision, robotic surgery improves the surgeon’s visibility and access to narrow spaces in the pelvis. It may result in a: ● Shorter hospital stay ● Quicker return to activities ● Smaller scar Cynthia Garza, M.S.N., RN, is the Director of Surgical & Endoscopy Services at Texas Health Mansfield. “Robotic surgery is much less invasive than open surgery,” Cynthia says. Texas Health Mansfield is able to offer robotic surgeries thanks to the expert skills of the hospital’s surgeons, she notes. “Robotic surgery does not replace the surgeon or the surgical team,” Cynthia says. “It’s a tool for them to use.” Discover our Women’s Center Visit TexasHealthMansfield.org/ Women to learn more about how we can help you feel whole again. Having robotic surgery or any procedure is up to you and your surgeon. But surgery may be the next step if nonsurgical treatments have not helped you reach your health goals. 4 TexasHealthMansfield.org Nationally recognized for quality stroke care Certified by The Joint Commission A stroke is a medical emergency. It requires swift recognition and expert treatment for the best chance of a full recovery. Should you or a loved one ever need immediate stroke care, you can count on receiving it close by at Texas Health Mansfield. In August, The Joint Commission certified Texas Health Mansfield as a Primary Stroke Center. This certification came after an evaluation of the hospital’s stroke program. It shows that the hospital meets some of the highest quality and safety standards for stroke care practiced by hospitals around the country. It takes a team An entire team works in collaboration to provide swift stroke care, notes Chief Nursing Officer Kristen Sutton, RN, M.S.N. This includes emergency department doctors and nurses, lab and imaging team members, neurologists, critical care nurses, and more. When stroke patients arrive in the emergency department, this team springs into action. Among other steps, patients receive a CT scan and neurological exam. This helps determine if they’re eligible for clot-busting medication that can stop the most common type of stroke and prevent or limit brain damage. “It’s a very stringent process,” Kristen says. “You have to perform many steps in a matter of minutes because time is brain.” The longer a stroke goes untreated, the more brain cells are lost and the greater the chance of disability. Post-stroke care The amazing stroke care that the team provides doesn’t end when the emergency phase of the stroke has passed. Texas Health Mansfield connects stroke survivors to a variety of services and resources to help them recover after their hospital stay. For instance, a patient may need home healthcare; outpatient physical, speech or occupational therapy; or a short stay in a rehabilitation facility. Doctors might also follow up with patients to make sure they are on the right therapies to help prevent another stroke. Caring for the whole you The healing provided at Texas Health Mansfield isn’t just focused on treating the stroke. Team members care for the whole person—mind, body and spirit, an approach that sets the hospital apart from others. “We proudly offer highquality, safe stroke care for our community in a whole-person fashion,” Kristen says.
Winter 2023 5 Lifesaving care for heart attacks Treating severe heart attacks with speed and skill Timely treatment is often the key to surviving a heart attack and making a recovery. That’s what you’ll find nearby at Texas Health Hospital Mansfield. Texas Health Mansfield has a 24/7 cardiac catheterization (cath) lab and a team capable of treating even the most severe heart attacks, known as STEMIs (ST-elevated myocardial infarctions). During this type of heart attack, a coronary artery is completely blocked. The longer the heart muscle goes without blood, the greater the risk of lasting heart damage and disability. Heart attack patients who arrive in the emergency room are quickly taken to the cath lab for treatment. Specialists there use equipment such as balloon-tipped catheters to locate and open blocked arteries in the heart. “We aim to treat heart attacks as quickly as possible to help our patients survive and make a full recovery,” says Chief Medical Officer Ronny Ford, M.D. “Our team is focused on delivering exceptional healthcare to our patients with the utmost compassion.” A partnership to feed our community Volunteers distribute food, whole-person care Texas Health Mansfield’s commitment to whole-person care extends to those in our community, says Director of Chaplain Services Desmond Haye, M.P.H., M.Div., BCC. One example of how this commitment was recently put into practice was through a local partnership. Team members distributed nutritious food and helpful services to families in the community. For the second year, Texas Health Mansfield teamed up with Mansfield Mission Center to sponsor a mobile food market in a local neighborhood for those facing food insecurity. Every Saturday during July, team members volunteered to serve families and individuals healthy food items. They also helped provide: ● A1C blood sugar tests, blood pressure checks and other screenings ● Health information for those who needed followup treatment ● Spiritual support to anyone who wanted to talk with a chaplain “Anyone in need could come and access these free services,” Desmond says. “For those individuals who weren’t able to come out, we took the food to them. We went from door to door.” Hospital leaders are intentional about giving back through a work culture that makes it easy to volunteer. “Our mission of extending the healing ministry of Christ and our commitment to whole-person care for every person drives everything we do,” Desmond says. Act quickly Heart attack warning signs may include: ● Chest discomfort ● Arm, shoulder, neck, jaw or back pain ● Shortness of breath If you suspect you’re having a heart attack, call 911 right away.

Winter 2023 7 A top rating for patient safety Safety grades are in, and Texas Health Hospital Mansfield earned an A! Learn more about what our safety rating means. Visit LeapfrogGroup.org. For two straight grading periods, Texas Health Mansfield earned the highest rating from The Leapfrog Group, which publishes safety and quality data for hospitals around the country two times per year. The data helps consumers make informed choices when seeking care. The letter grade helps show how safe hospitals are for patients when it comes to preventable harm, like medication errors, accidents and infections. Earning two consecutive grade A ratings (most recently last fall) reflects our team’s continual commitment to providing safe and exceptional care. “Our grade A rating allows our community to see at a glance that this is a safe hospital,” says Chief Medical Officer Ronny Ford, M.D. Keep Me Safe is one of four service standards. Love Me, Make It Easy and Own It are the other categories. The grade A rating reflects team members’ efforts to live out this service standard, Dr. Ford notes. Texas Health Mansfield has processes in place to ensure safety. For instance, morning safety huddles “set the tone for each day,” Dr. Ford says. Throughout the hospital, interactive message boards make it easy for team members to discuss safety concerns, and barcode scanning helps ensure that patients get only the medications that are meant for them. ICU: Here for you Our intensive care unit has the compassionate experts you need Caring for the severely injured or ill is what experts in Texas Health Mansfield’s intensive care unit (ICU) do best. Here’s what to know about the ICU and those who work there. ICUs provide lifesaving care. ICUs are for patients who require intensive monitoring, assessments and treatments for life-threatening conditions. Respiratory failure, kidney failure, heart problems and multiple organ failure are among these conditions. Advanced equipment, like ventilators, are used to provide life support. The ICU has on-site critical care providers. The ICU team at Texas Health Mansfield includes critical care medicine doctors, physicians known as hospitalists and registered nurses to provide 24/7 care. A typical ICU stay is one to four days. “The goal of care in the ICU is to stabilize patients and get them moving in the right direction on their path to wellbeing,” says Launa Williamson, Patient Care Services Director (leader of critical care). When they’re well enough to leave the ICU, patients might go to another hospital floor before being discharged to go home or to rehabilitation, as needed. The ICU team is committed to patients and families. “We pride ourselves on caring for the whole person and the families who are here with our patients,” Launa says. “We are with them in the moment.”
